DP Theme Day - Cemetaries

The Daily Photo website has a theme day on the 1st of each month; I'm posting mine a little early, since I will be out of town for the actual 1st of Oct. The theme this month is cemetaries, and this picture is of the National Veteran's Cemetary in Arizona. The colored flag is of the marker for my father-in-law, Phillip Arther Johnson, who served our country in two wars

Farming in the 'burbs

Here's another shot from the farm we visited yesterday; the 'burbs have built up all around it, but it's all in the master plan - it's called Agritopia, and it's meant to be a neighborly community built around an urban farm. Check out their website for more info

Wandering through a farm in Gilbert that's open to the public - my three Supermen; those are grapevines growing along the sides of the path and overhead, although I can't believe they're alive after the summer we had - there were grapes on them, too!

Our neighbor's tree has grown so much that it touches the water now - makes for a pretty picture, especially at sunset

This little lake is up on the rim, past Payson; I've lost my camera so will have to rely on my stock of photos until I find it - I suspect a two-year old that lives in my house has something to do with it...

Bus stop

This city bus stop is in Tempe, just outside of Tempe High School. It's very pretty, but I also heard that the artist was told to create a bus stop that would be impossible to lie down on. Gotta keep the riffraff out.

Downtown Chandler

Chandler is an old community (for Arizona), but it was just a farming community until fairly recently; the downtown area is trying to find it's place in the world of restaurants and culture, but it's got a nice hometown feel to it.

Cholla Cactus

If you find yourself hiking in our desert, and you see some cholla cactus, make sure you watch where you are walking! They drop off little balls of spines, which I grew up calling Jumping Cactus, because they do seem to jump onto your shoe - ouch!

We went to the Gila County Fair yesterday up in Payson and watched the demolition derby - you gotta love a good smash-em-up derby!

Yesterday, we took a road trip up to Prescott just to get out of the heat - they had an art fair going on in their town square. It's a pretty little town square, as you can see, with big trees and lots of shade.
