Chandler is playful

This sign, outside of Tumbleweed park in Chandler, announces that we are a Playful City - I had to google this to find out exactly why - turns out, this is a national recognition program honoring cities and towns that "take action for play". The award is given out by a non-profit called KaBoom!, which encourages communities to build playgrounds -

Habitat for Humanity community

On Saturday, I worked at this subdivision being created of Habitat for Humanity homes - it's a unique concept, building a whole subdivision, and it turns out that it works - all of the families work side-by-side, building their homes, and then they all move into the same neighborhood. The ones that have been created show a lot of neighborhood pride - it was a great experience.

Arizona blogs theme day - Old Arizona

On the 15th of the month, the Arizona daily photo blogs do their own theme day - I got to pick this one, and I chose "old Arizona" - this was harder than I thought it would be! I finally settled on a photo of part of downtown Chandler, including one of the oldest stores still there, Saba's western wear. The downtown storefronts have been restored to look like their original selves, and it does give a nice sense of history to it.

The town of Chandler is really not very old - it started out when a veternarian, Dr. AJ Chandler, bought a bunch of land in 1891. He then subdivided his ranch, started advertising, and built up the little town of Chandler, outside of Phoenix. The center of town basically started around the site in the above photograph, beginning with the opening of the Hotel San Marcos in 1913. Chandler was officially incorporated into a town in 1920.

Light Rail

Our city is not very good at public transportation, but we are making an attempt - the light rail is new, and hopefully it's catching on - the boys and I took it downtown yesterday to visit the Children's Museum, and quite a few people were riding it, even in the middle of the day

We went and saw Rock, Paper, and Scissors at the Childsplay theater, held at the Tempe Center for the Arts this weekend - this sculpture is part of the current art exhibit there, and my boys were fascinated with it - anything bloody and gory will get a little boys attention, I think
